Underground Wireless Access

BART is deploying cellular services in its tunnels so riders may use cell phones and other wireless devices while underground. Service has been available in San Francisco stations and the goal is to expand coverage throughout the entire BART system.

In addition to providing a valuable service to riders, providing these services is profitable. Many carriers including Sprint, Nextel, Cingular, and T-Mobile are eager to increase their coverage and will pay $1,700 per month to provide service for a single station. In the long run, an additional $2 million could be earned per year.
